From Languishing to Flourishing

A recent article from NY Times, by psychologist Adam Grant, described the dominate emotion of 2021.

“It wasn’t burnout — we still had energy. It wasn’t depression — we didn’t feel hopeless. We just felt somewhat joyless and aimless. It turns out there’s a name for that: languishing.

Languishing is a sense of stagnation and emptiness. It feels as if you’re muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield… Languishing dulls your motivation and disrupts your ability to focus.”

So how do you get back to engagement, refocus your energy, and become more passionate about your life, your career, and your relationships?

Flourishing is a state of well-being and involvement, you are back in the flow, you are more involved and more engaged. Becoming self-aware and Mindful about the state of your being, your thoughts and emotions and acknowledging them is the first step.

Taking care of yourself on all levels, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual is the next step, by accomplishing small goals to help you move forward and flourish. Yes it may take time, and every long journey begins with a first step.

Once you establish your priorities, you could clarify your mission again, and regain a strong sense of meaning, mastery and mattering to others.

Adam Grant concludes: “As we head into a new post-pandemic reality, it’s time to rethink our understanding of mental health and well-being. “Not depressed” doesn’t mean you’re not struggling. “Not burned out” doesn’t mean you’re fired up. By acknowledging that so many of us are languishing, we can start giving voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of the void.”
